$2,000 #GreaterMidNorthCoast community funding to support City Physie’s growth

Verena Nicotera and Jodie Prior are passionate about physie, but more so about creating an environment where members of all ages can thrive.

That was the vision when they launched Coffs City Physie in February 2020, and now courtesy of a $2000 funding boost through the Greater Bank’s #GreaterMidNorthCoast program, they are looking to further improve their showground facilities.

Launched in January, the #GreaterMidNorthCoast program gives community groups from across the region the chance to share in $3000 each month, with the winners determined by a public vote.

Coffs City Physie took out this month's vote and major prize, while runners-up, Ronald McDonald Family Retreat, Forster and Bowraville Lions Club each received $500.

BjP Physical Culture, or Physie, is a form of dance that incorporates a range of disciplines including contemporary and modern jazz, yoga, and body movement.

Coffs City Physie services a growing membership ranging in ages from three years to those in their 70s, who learn up to five choreographed routines a year that is performed at Zone and National titles.

Based at the Showground in the heart of Coffs, Verena said that it’s been the passion of the teachers and members that have driven their success over the past 12 months.

“When establishing the new studio, we wanted to create a fun, friendly and engaging environment where everyone can thrive, whether they have ambitions of competing at national titles, or simply take part for the friendship and exercise,” Verena said.

“We finished our first year with 70 members, which we couldn’t have been happier with. Now, that number has grown to more than 90.

“What’s also helped us has been our central location at the showground. Something that has been missing from the facility though is mirrors, which are important for participants to see themselves and correct their positions.

“This funding from Greater Bank will allow us to purchase the mirrors and covers. At this point, it would not otherwise have been possible. It will make a huge difference to our sessions and teaching.”

Greater Bank’s Mid North Coast Regional Sales Manager, Karl McLean said that given fundraising and sponsorship dollars across the community are tight, he was delighted to support a small but passionate group that is putting the money to good use.

“It’s wonderful to provide this type of support to grassroots organisations on the Mid North Coast who otherwise could struggle to raise these sorts of funds,” Mr McLean said.

“The #GreaterMidNortCoast is already making a difference to community groups across the region and we look forward to providing this continued support.”

The March round of the #GreaterMidNorthCoast program is now open with Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast, Alesco Senior College Tuncurry Campus and Grafton District Meals on Wheels each vying for a share in the $3000 funding. Voting closes at 5pm on 24 February 2021.
